Libertad, which is Spanish for “Liberty and
Freedom,” is Velvet Revolver’s latest release. While the title means what all Americas want in life from government and others counties, it also could be looked
at closer. For the guys in Velvet Revolver it means more to them then just liberty and freedom from their governments, from
their own personal demons. Now sober and free from those demons, the guys offer a different outlook in their music.
Yes, I’m glad
that they are sober, but the album was hurt by it. Contraband was phenomenal, Libertad was a good idea but the result was
somewhat disappointing. I hate comparing anything especially albums from the same artist/band, so I’m shying away from
that and focusing on Libertad as if it was the first album from Velvet Revolver.
Like every album there
are high points and low points somewhere and this album is no different. While Slash keeps up the “solos” that
he’s famous for, they do slump a little in some parts. Although they do slump sometimes, the others are equally impressive,
if not better than the older ones. Scott’s vocals also seem a little down from previous times, but those two things
are not why we are here. The new album “Libertad” starts off with a solid music performance in “Let it Roll.”
It provides a great beginning, guitars, and drums. It is a really catchy tune, but repeats “candy” way too much!
“She Builds Quick Machines,” which happens to be the first single off the album, has it all, great beginning,
solos, upbeat, and an awesome chorus. “The Last Fight,” is a slower song, but its lyrics make up for it. The vocals
in “Pills, Demons & ECT,” are great. Overall, this was a disappointing album, but it does have its high points.
