There are some things that are hard to come back from if you are a musician or a band. The Exies passed that test having struck back with their latest album “A Modern Way of Living With the Truth.” After leaving their label and management after making two albums the band comes back stronger than ever. The album mixes heavy and edgy style of music sandwiched in between two softer ballads. The album touches with a lot of emotions that every listener can relate to. The more emo and grunge band has matured into a powerhouse that still includes those genres, but spices things up with a heavier, rougher rock sound. The lyrics of the songs were all excellent. There were some deep lyrical masterpieces throughout the album. The seventh song on the album “Dose,” which could and maybe should be the next single had a hard hitting message. The music was loud, but not loud enough were you couldn’t hear Scott singing. It’s by far one of the best songs so far this year! The vocals were clear most of the way through, with a couple rough parts tossed in. The back-up vocals were evenly mixed with the lead, which made a great balance. Musically, they have adjusted a bit and have become more powerful for it.

The guitar work is amazing; I’m always a sucker for a great guitar riff or solo. They have distinct parts in each song that you can hear very easily. Hoss’s drums set the tempo for the songs, especially on song eight “Better Now.”

Overall this is a solid album. Some songs take a few times listening to them to really appreciate them, but other are instantly embedded in your head. Single #1 “Different Than You,” “Dose,” and “A Modern Way of Living With the Truth” are the three songs that really jump out after you. They guys have really matured over the past few years and this album shows it. Any rock fan should have this album and if this album is a sign to come, the next albums are the same way.
