What is it about bands coming together, recording and then never getting off the ground. All that man power and time almost down the drain. Well for every band that does do that those members gain experience never the less and grow. Well for many of Society Red’s line-up this is all too known. Lead man Damien Starkey had a band called Burn Season that had a huge deal with a label went down that drain along with a fully recorded album. Now flash to 2008 and that same Damien Starkey got a few guys together to form Society Red. They began to write and record for an album as Philips and Stewart jumped aboard to complete the line up. The EP, which is how we will refer to it, “Love and Hate” is a mind blowing track with pounding drums, raging guitars and pretty good vocals (including gang vocals in spots). It is an easy track to get into and has a lot of live energy oozing from it. “So Unhappy” takes a step back in the loudness of the music so listeners can focus on the vocals. It is a nice change of pace for the band as they audition themselves as a multi talented band. Next, “High Life,” heads back to the smash month rocking of “Love and Hate.” It’s a high energy song that sounds like it would be a blast watching live. The guitar solo during the 2 and a half minute track its sweet, but what sets the song off is Starkey’s vocals and backing screams spread throughout. “Everything” begins with a distant vocal set and a piano until it blasts off for a wonderful 3 minute ride. It bleeds of a heartfelt emotional triumph that will impact and connect with listeners. “Vegas” is a high energy anthem that will get the mosh pit going and the rest of the crowd jumping up and down. They infuse a mixture of vocals throughout the entire track as there are poetic vocals as well as some screaming. “Chasing the Reason” is just an absolutely jaw dropping track. You instantly get into the song bobbing your head with your eyes closed. It is a slow power hungry track that is lead by dominating vocals and great guitars and solid drums. The last track of the 7 on the EP is “Welcome to the Show.” The nearly 4 minute affair lights your ears on fire. It begins with a lead in and then explodes with pounding drums and raging guitars. The added effect of a crowd yelling in the beginning is a nice added touch. This could be an opening track to a show or the ending to a phenomenal show. Overall this is an awesome 7 song album and I personally can’t wait until a LP hits stores. That shouldn’t be long either as a label should swipe them up (if I ran a label I’d sign them today). This is something that everyone needs to check out and I strongly urge swinging by the myspace page and preview a track or 2.
