Charlotte Sometimes, the alias of the lead singer/songwriter, comes on the scene with their debut album. After years of dance and theater, Charlotte picked up a guitar and hasn’t looked back. She started writing songs and by the end of her high school career she had over 100 songs written. The debut album hit stores May of 2008 via Geffen Records. The album begins with “Losing Sleep.” This starts the adventure you are about to take. With multiple voices woven together with a nice steady beat. The vocals to get annoying with “trying, trying, trying” sang over and over with a long stuttering technique, but other than that it’s not a bad start. Track 2, “How I Could Just Kill A Man,” explains the reasons with she could just kill a man. It also adds in a high volume of keys in the track and the back up singer that sings some of the words that begin the sentences begin sung. Its sounds weird but by the end of the track you expect it. The title track spins off the album 3rd. It’s a very catchy track and this is where the album begins to pick up speed. The multiple voices appear in this track as they did in the first two. On this track you can really hear the drums more and you have to pay close attention the lyrics as they as a bit strange. “Sweet Valium High” comes up next on the album track list. This song features a bit of a naughty side to it, with a bit of cussing involved. It is very catchy and a fun track. There is one word in the whole sound that she says very uniquely, take a listen and see if you can pick it out. “AEIOU” is a sarcastic slap in the face and it also shows Charlotte’s range. It’s a super fun track but she does that stuttering singing again that sort of distracts you from the track. “Army Men” is a very strange track with weird lyrics and sang in a strange way. It’s just a strange track altogether. It is like going around your hand to get to your thumb, it just took a lot of words to get the message out. “Build the Moon” uses keys and an acoustic guitar to make the highlights of Charlotte’s voice shine. The album concludes with the track “Pilot.” It offers listeners a new aspect from Charlotte and the band, a pre-made beat. Overall the album starts off like there is something there, hits its stride and then loses its shoe (and falls down). If it does only one thing it showcases Charlotte’s voice. She has a wonder, fresh voice that with take her to God only knows where, but the stuttering vocals need to go as they only distract you. There is much potential in Charlotte and she intrigues me so much that I can’t wait until the next album.
