Say good-bye to that old re-produced sound that others sometime offer
and say hello to a “New Wave” of sounds. Against Me!’s new album “New Wave” is a fresh sound
to everyone’s ears. The band plays a pop-punk sound that leaves the pop on the back burner. The incredibly unique vocals
of Tom Gabel seem to set off the bands music but, it doesn’t reach its full potential in some places. They make great
strides in making themselves a place in the punk genre tree of successes.
The titled track “New Wave,” sets a great pace for the rest of the album. Its upbeat, fast pace with an
amazing guitar solo gets the listener ready to rock the day away. The second track, “Up the Cuts,” shows of the
time and effort that they put into the album. The backing vocals on this song, which might not be what people listen to a
song for, are some of the clearest, well placed ones that I have ever heard. “STOP!” is the fifth song on the
album. It is a very fast and catchy song. The music is great and the vocals are great.
“Borne On The FM Waves Of The Heart,” is a good change of pace. It is a slower song that would be a great
radio song.
Overall it’s not the greatest album on the earth, but it is a solid enough album to gain respect for the band.
It has a few bright spots that the band can grow from. We all have to remember that this is their major-label debut and everyone
has to grow. For me the only way the band can go is up as they use this album as a stepping stone to great things.
